Secondary Gains from Procrastinating

Yes, it’s another day and you still haven’t done; that report, fixed the leaking tap, or done your exercise…….etc

Following on from my blog “Beat Procrastination – Keeping in Your Comfort Zone” I highlighted the:

Thoughts => Feelings => Behaviour = Outcome

Thoughts that lead to the Feelings/Emotions lead to the Behaviour that result in your Outcomes.  Put simply, you can see what someone/anyone is thinking by the outcomes in their lives. Are they financial broke? overweight? have bad relationships? – then you know what they are thinking! ie. “I’m broke”, “I’m overweight”, “I can’t communicate with my partner/kids etc”.

Your Thoughts affect Your Behaviour

So what do you do? The good news is that at any one time we can insert any thought we want into our conscious and if it is repeated enough times – like through affirmations, “I’m a money magnet’, “I’m fit and healthy”, “I appreciate XYZ in my relationships”, the unconscious then starts to take action towards the desired outcome.

Is your behaviour Serving or Sabotaging You?

So when you are procrastinating ask yourself these questions:

1 / What was I thinking before I felt (tired, lethargic, bored, listless, distracted etc) that led me to procrastinate?

eg. “It’s too hard”, ‘I’ll do it later”, ‘I don’t feel very well” etc

2/ What am I getting out of telling myself this?

(Hint; it either has something to do with avoiding pain or gaining pleasure eg. “I avoid the pain of having to collect the information for the report” or “I gain attention from others if I’m not feeling very well’)

What you’ll notice is that this is purely TEMPORARY in the form of avoiding, refusing or denying a task that needs to be done.

 Try this Exercise

You still don’t know what you are gaining from procrastinating?  Write out this exercise:

a) What WILL happen if I DO this task?

b) What WON’T happen if I Do this task?

c) What WILL happen if I DON’T do this task?

d) What WON’T happen if I DON’T do this task?

This is called the SECONDARY GAIN. Once you become aware of the hidden gain (or belief) you are holding onto, you’ll become aware of what really is holding you back.  Awareness is 90% of the journey! It could be a story you keep telling others so that you gain attention from other people, it could be an excuse that you keep repeating to yourself so that you don’t have to perform etc. Then you only need to change the behaviour so that it serves you, not sabotages you.
