Beat Procrastination – Make Simple, Easy Goals

When people procrastinate it is usually because they feel overwhelmed, are unclear as to what to do next, have a fear of making a decision in case it’s the wrong one (more on fears in later blogs) etc

One of the main reasons that people procrastinate is because they don’t have clear GOALS!

So how does the subconscious know what to feed back to your conscious if it has no idea of what you want. (Note; many of my clients when I ask them what they want they say, “I want to be happy’ (too vague) or worse “I don’t want to smoke’ (the subconscious doesn’t recognise DON’T. For example; Don’t whatever you do think of a pink elephant! What did you think of? Yes, a pink elephant!)

To overcome procrastination – ONLY set yourself 3 SMALL goals for the purpose of this exercise (as we will deal with bigger goal setting as we progress through the Procrastination Course.

These 3 goals are for tomorrow, they must be easy to achieve and written down on paper (as the subconscious registers them this way).

They can be only as big as;

  1. Sewing on a button
  2. Drafting the first paragraph of a report
  3. Cleaning clutter from your desk
  4. Doing the dishes
  5. Making a phonecall or sending an email
  6. Calling your father or mother
  7. Buying a birthday card and filling it out – ready to post

As you can see they are very achievable goals that may take only 5 – 15 minutes to do.  Then once you have completed them you cross them off of you list.  Then you MUST REWARD YOURSELF!

The subconscious is like a small child and if it is rewarded – it is encouraged to reinforce its behaviour..

Rewards can be;

  • 15 minutes of reading a good book
  • 15 minutes on Facebook or surfing the internet
  • 15 minute chat with a colleague/friend
  • A cup of tea and biscuit
  • 15 minute powernap

Notice how they are time specific as we want to avoid your “rewards’ then becoming a new way of procrastinating.

Then see how you feel once you have achieved something worthwhile – no matter how small.

PLEASE COMMENT BELOW on your 3 small goals – and I’ll promise to respond.

Warmest Hugs
